This EDUcamp is a fast-paced week filled with singing, large group performance, daily competitions and recreational activities. You’ll get to choose from one of several tracks. You’ll enjoy musical instruction from award-winning BJU faculty and gain a new enthusiasm for your instrument.

At EDUcamp you’ll benefit from daily devotionals and Bible challenge sessions that will strengthen your faith and help you develop a strong biblical worldview. Camp instructors will demonstrate how you can glorify God by using each new skill.

Activities

  • Strengthen and sharpen your musical skills.
  • Go to focused lessons, small group sectionals and band or string orchestra rehearsals.
  • Sing in the combined camp choir.
  • Learn through musical games and special activities, including our famous musical scavenger hunt.
  • Perform in the choir, band or orchestra in a final camp concert for family and friends on Friday.
  • Grow spiritually through devotions and Bible challenges.

Tracks

Intermediate and Advanced Piano (Grades 4–8)

Campers will be placed into several different levels based on their ability. They should bring classical and/or sacred pieces they are currently working on to study in lessons and practice time and to perform in recitals. They'll also enjoy both private and group piano instruction along with a variety of basic musicianship classes in addition to strengthening note-reading and hand-eye coordination in handbell classes.

Intermediate and Advanced String Orchestra (Grades 4–8)

To apply for one of the string orchestras, campers must submit a two-minute video audition recorded on a phone or other device.

Your recording must include a scale and a short portion of a piece (maximum of 1.5 minutes) both demonstrating your highest level of playing. Specific audition and upload instructions will be sent within four weeks prior to the beginning of camp after your application has been received.

The string faculty will evaluate your audition and place you into the orchestra appropriate to your level. A minimum of at least one year of playing experience on your instrument is required for Intermediate Orchestra. Advanced Orchestra musicians must demonstrate skills in shifting to third position or above and a high level of musicianship.

Orchestra and chair placement will be confirmed on Monday of camp.

Intermediate Harp (Grades 4-8)

A minimum of one year playing experience is required. Campers will learn ensemble and performance skills and enjoy group and private instruction. Bring your current solo pieces to perform and work on in lessons; ensemble music will be sent at least 3 weeks in advance of camp. A limited number of harps (pedal and lever) are available for rent. Please email ahead for availability.

Intermediate Band (Grades 6–8)

Campers must be capable of performing grade II band literature and have at least one year of playing experience on their instrument.

Sight-reading material will be provided for chair placement auditions on Monday morning.

Camp Details

Instrument Rental

A limited number of band or string instruments are available for rental for $10 for the week (no fee for use of percussion instruments). A limited number of pedal harps may be rented for $75, lever harps for $50. Please email ahead for availability.

Recitals/Concerts

Camp will conclude on Friday with piano recitals at 2:30 p.m. and an all-camp concert at 4 p.m. Attire for the Friday concerts will be normal camp attire along with the camp shirt provided at check-in.

General Information

Arrival/Departure

When to Arrive

Camp check-in is on Monday between 7:30 and 8 a.m. in Gustafson Fine Arts Center lobby. Daily drop off for campers each day (Tuesday – Friday) will be at 7:50 a.m. at the Museum & Gallery visitor parking lot across from the outdoor plaza of the Gustafson Fine Arts Center.

What to do When You Arrive

When you check-in our camp counselors will give you your camp schedule and T-shirt. If you have a camp balance, you can take care of it at this time. The fun begins on Monday at 8 a.m.!

When to Depart

Day campers can be picked up at 5 p.m. at the Museum & Gallery visitor parking lot across from the outdoor plaza at the Gustafson Fine Arts Center.

Junior Music Camp will end Friday at @5:30 p.m. after the final concert. All family members are welcome to attend the final piano recitals at 2:30 p.m. and the final concert at 4 p.m.

All supplies needed for camp will be provided unless otherwise noted in each specific camp information. Please be sure to bring your instrument. Instruments can also be rented as needed.

Please note: BJU cannot be responsible for money, valuables or personal articles.

What to wear

Long athletic shorts, jeans or pants, and T-shirts are the normal camp attire. Tennis shoes are recommended. Swimsuits for girls should be one-piece garments. Water activities will occur depending upon the week's schedule.

Lunch will be served in our dining common in an all-you-can-eat buffet style. Any food concerns (allergies, diet restrictions, etc.) can be noted in the online registration form.

Paul Jantz

Paul Jantz is the director of brass studies and director of musical activities in the School of Fine Arts and Communication at BJU. He performs with the University's Symphony Orchestra and conducts the University's Trombone Choir and Brass Choir. He has been involved with summer music camps and church instrumental music programs for over 40 years.
